It looks as though 4G is breaking out of it's box. With all the news in the last two weeks, let me try to drill down on what all this means. We had Sprint talking to T-Mobile about a possible merger or buyout. This was big news, and I posted a blog tittled "Sprint T-Mobile the super network" I posted this on 3-15-2011 after the news broke about this press release. Basically I wrote how the number 3 Sprint, and the number 4 T-Mobile would become the number one network.
And out of nowhere, without one ounce of press, on 3-20-11 a press release about AT&T / T-Mobile buyout. This was an interesting development.
Now why did this happen.? Here's what I think. AT&T first off could not let this Sprint / T-Mobile merger take place, I can't help but to feel that AT&T is threatened by Sprint.
The press is writing that Sprint will be in a distant 3RD where carriers are concerned. There are two ways of looking at this. It really depends on, how you define 3RD. They , the press is counting subscribers, and I say that's fair. But lets look at what is really going to matter as these technologies move forward.
Sprint has more spectrum than any carrier, and in the long run, this makes them number one, and time will prove this point. They are only using a small portion of their available spectrum.
And I will push this point again. AT&T could not sit back and let sprint gain even more of this valuable asset. When they, AT&T has a major deficit in this
department. As these technologies are growing, or doubling every year, stressing these networks, crashing some. Bandwidth is a big concern. So he who has the bandwidth, in the end, wins.
Lets move on to some even more interesting news. As AT&T was getting their press on, Sprint and Google was getting their press ready. And this is big news to me, as this is going to define the 4G space. I posted another blog tittled
"Google Look Here" on December 15th 2010, Please read this blog, as this will make more since. Where I was speaking to google about building a device for the 4G network, that is Clear, which the majority owner is Sprint. I was telling them they need to build this device, and this would make them the king of 4G, since they are already in the handset market.
In this blog I explained that this would be a perfect platform for their Gmail integration with Google Voice app, and their Android operating system.
And how this would be the device that would change all things 4G, and how they,Google would become the king of 4G, and become this massive phone company. and all they needed was this device. Without having to build the first tower. And since they are a partner of the Clear brand. This should not be a problem.
Here is the press from Sprint and Google, on 3-21-2011, that's one day after the AT&T / T-Mobile buyout. "Sprint Samsung Introduce Nexus S 4G" To be released in the spring. I can't help but think this was in response to the AT&T news. Tit for Tat if you will.
And Google and Sprint has integrated within the phone and sprint's network, Google voice in this powerful Android device.
For those that follow the wireless space, in 2009 AT&T Kinda kicked Google Voice to the curb, and off their network. And this caused an FCC query as to why they would have made this decision. AT&T also sees this app as a threat. And they should.
Sprint bought in the 4G space for a reason, and they are leading the way, and this is going to shape, and change 4G in the best possible way. The press can call Sprint a distant number three today, but tomorrow paints a different picture. You can now make phone calls on the 4G network through Google voice, which has no minutes, or data caps, which is very good quality, and make unlimited text. And with all the features that come with Google voice, there is no limits to what you the consumer can do.
I have always said how important Clear was to the wireless, and 4G space. As this is the only network without limits. And how they are needed to move this technology forward. And if not for Clear, then the monopoly's win. Things are moving fast forward now, and Sprint Clear, and Google will emerge the winner's, as well as the consumers. They finally get to know what 4G means through a device, thanks to Sprints vision of the future.
Sprint will find they really did not need T-Mobile.
